Another disappointing season for KXIP this season, they fought very hard to qualify for playoffs but missed out by small margins.
The last time KXIP qualified for playoffs back in 2014. They topped the charts in IPL 2014. From then, they didn't qualify for playoffs in all seasons.
IPL 2015:
won: 3
lost:11
Position: 8
IPL 2016:
won: 4
lost:10
Position: 8
IPL 2017:
won: 7
lost:7
Position: 5
IPL 2018:
won: 6
lost:8
Position: 7
IPL 2019:
won: 6
lost:8
Position: 6
But every year is different from this year as this is a real test for KL Rahul as Captain this season. KXIP won 6 matches out of 14.
IPL 2020:
won: 6
lost: 8
Position: 6
It's hard for KXIP, they have the best players in the world such as KL Rahul, Chris Gayle, Glenn Maxwell, Chris Jordan, Sheldon Cotrell, and many still have not qualified for playoffs. They lost but entertained us.

Gayle didn't play a match in KXIP's first 7 games, and he has a good run in the final 7 games. This man striking at 137.14 at the age of 41. Still the "Universe Boss"
KXIP without Gayle: 1 win out of 7
KXIP with Gayle: 5 wins out of 7
His scores this season: 53, 24, 29, 20, 51, 99, 12
Mayank and KL Rahul are excellent this season. They scored 1094 runs between them and there are many special knocks.
- Agarwal fighting knock of 89 in 1st match vs DC, Despite falling wickets at the other end, he stands tall till the final over and draws the game. But DC wins the super over.
- In the second match vs RCB, KL Rahul played one of the best knocks of his career. His 132* is the highest score by an Indian Batsman in IPL
- Agarwal Century(106*) vs RR
Pooran outstanding with the bat and one of the contenders of Altroz Super Strikers.
KXIP has a lot of fast and spin bowling options

Ravi Bishnoi and Murugan Ashwin have done well under the coach Anil Kumble. After watching the performances of both players, it seems like they have learned the maximum possible out of him. They took 22 wickets between them.
Coming to pace bowlers, Shami has been outstanding with the ball who has taken 20 wickets. But there is no support for Shami from the other end. He is the only Pacer from KXIP who played all matches.
Shami vs other pacers:
Wickets | Avg | BBI | Eco | SR | |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
M Shami | 20 | 23.00 | 3/15 | 8.57 | 16.10 |
Others | 26 | 32.53 | 3/17 | 9.26 | 21.07 |
Jordan did well in the second half of the Tournament.
In the first half:
Overs: 10
Runs: 135
Wickets: 0
Avg: -
In the second half:
Overs: 20.3
Runs: 109
Wickets: 9
Avg: 18.16
With all his experience, Jordan helped KXIP to bounce back in the Tournament.
Arshdeep Singh from India U-19 did well in this season. Taken 9 wickets at a strike rate of 16.55 best after Shami in KXIP.
Coming to All-Rounders, they have the likes of Maxwell and Neesham in the squad. Maxwell who has successfully run in 2014 with 552 runs in 16 matches was unable to mark his presence this season.
Maxwell in UAE(2014): 300 runs in 5 matches
Maxwell in UAE(2020): 108 runs in 13 matches
Neesham, after his great form in 2019 WC. He was picked by KXIP but he didn't able to find a permanent spot in playing XI. He scored 19 runs and 2 wickets at an average of 74.00 in 5 matches.
Didn't expect this from the world's best allrounders.
Coming to Captaincy, KL Rahul for the first time. There is a lot of pressure on you as he needs to open, keep the wickets, and captaining at the same time. I think Rahul didn't stand as the best captain for KXIP.
Captaining for the first time, you learn from every match. But KL Rahul is below par in Captaincy in every decision he has taken like the late addition of Chris Gayle, Changing players every match and didn't find their perfect XI, Bowling spin in death overs. These situations and pressure hit hard on KL Rahul which affected his Strike rate. Comparing the last 3 seasons
Runs | Avg | SR | |
---|---|---|---|
2018 | 659 | 54.91 | 158.41 |
2019 | 593 | 53.90 | 135.38 |
2020 | 670 | 55.83 | 129.34 |
Stat: He is the first Indian batsman to score 500+ runs in 3 consecutive IPL Seasons.
He has the record of the fastest fifty every season. In 2018, he scored the fastest fifty in IPL in 14 balls.
In 2019, he scored the fastest fifty in 19 balls. But this year, KL Rahul fastest fifty came off in 35 balls.
It's a completely different story. He is consistent but not the KL we seen in the past 2 seasons.
