Shubman Gill, winner and player of the Tournament for ICC U-19 World Cup. He impressed everyone surprised by his technique, his elegance, quality of shots, bottom-handed technique, and everything during U-19 WC.
After U-19 WC, KKR bought Gill for 1.8 Cr back in 2018. He made his debut for KKR in 2018 vs SRH. His score 3(9) came at the No.7 batting position. Playing at lower order becomes difficult for him, so KKR decides to promote him at No.4. In the match vs CSK, he scored his 1st fifty and made his presence in IPL. After that good performance, Gill promoted as an opener and got the chance to open along with Narine.
There is no doubt about the performances of Gill. He is a great player and consistent performer in Domestic Cricket and IPL. In IPL 2020, he scored 311 runs in 9 matches including 2 fifties. His highest score in one IPL season.

All numbers are excellent but the concern is Strike Rate. He has the lowest SR among the players who have scored 200+ runs in this season.
Before the start of IPL, many players expressed their views on how Gill is good at KKR at the opening position. KKR Coach Brendon also said he will open for KKR the entire season and Styris said, " he is the best batsman for KKR". But when playing at the top positions, SR is an important factor as it boosts up the team's score in the powerplay.
Reason's behind Gill failure:
1) Gill partner Narine failed with the bat this season. Hope this could be created more pressure on Gill at the other end.
Narine Scores: 9(10), 0(2), 15(14), 3(5)
Narine down the order: 17(9)
Leaving that 17 runs, Narine scored 27 runs in 4 innings at an average of 6.75.
There could pressure on the player at another end if the 1st wicket goes down early in the innings.
2) Changing batting partners
This could be one of the reasons because when you are an experienced player, you can back other players and also able to rotate strikes easily.
In 4th match vs DC chasing 228 runs, KKR didn't get support from top-order Gill, Narine, Russell, Rana, and Karthik. Middle-order Morgan and Tripathi star with the bat and KKR scored 210 runs and lost by 18 runs. If they get any support from the top-order, this could be the highest target chased in IPL.
Rahul Tripathi who came at No.6 in the match scored quickfire 36(16) which helped him to open with Gill. At top, he scored 81(51), 4(10) and after that, they switched Tom Banton. After that match, they again sent Tripathi as opener.
An understanding between the openers helpful in the team for chasing huge targets or scoring more runs.
3) Lack of Confidence
Gill is in good form and scoring runs at ease but when the pressure builds up, the play lose their confidence to play aggressive shots.
Only 2 batsmen in KKR scored 200+ runs this season and all other players failed to make their presence in this league.

I think it's surprising. KKR's most valuable player Russell failed in IPL 2020. Even Pat Cummins scored more runs than Russell.

Andre Russell: 92 runs
But Gill shows a great character here when the wickets are losing at another end. Their loss builds a lot of pressure on him.

Recently, Indian opener Virender Sehwag also expressed his disappointment over Gill's performance at Top. He feels "Gill should play his natural game and should be more aggressive otherwise he should bat down the order giving chance to another player."
He also pointed out KKR team positions like "bits and pieces" where one or two are performing in every game and KKR management should give freedom to players to play their own game and follow the orders of the Captain.
After the 1st round-robin, Dinesh Karthik handed over Captaincy to 2019 WC winning captain Morgan so that he could focus more on his batting performances.

After Narine reported for suspect action, Chris Green failed to make an impact. KKR has opted for Lockie Ferguson vs SRH. He helped KKR win that match by taking 3 wickets in the match and also taken 2 wickets in super over.
